Scramble · One team score per hole

How a Captain’s Choice scramble works

Captain’s Choice is another name for a scramble. Everyone on the team hits, the team picks the best shot, and everyone plays the next shot from there until the ball is holed. The team records one score per hole.

The Pirate Captain explains Captain’s Choice: everyone tees off, the team picks the best ball, and team handicaps keep it fair. 17 seconds, captions on screen.

Hit, pick, repeat

All players tee off. The team chooses the best drive, and every player hits their next shot from that spot. Keep choosing the best result until the ball is in the hole. The team’s one score goes on the card.

Many events add house rules, such as a minimum number of drives per player. Agree on them before the first tee.

Team handicaps keep it fair

A scramble team handicap is a percentage of each player’s course handicap, from lowest to highest, added together. Turnt uses the allowances below.

Example: a two-person team with course handicaps of 8 and 20 gets 35% of 8 plus 15% of 20, which is 2.8 + 3.0 = 5.8, so the team receives 6 strokes.

Captain’s Choice in Turnt

Turnt’s Captain’s Choice is an 18-hole game for teams of two, three or four. The group picks how teams compete: a Nassau with front, back and overall matches, team skins, or low team total.

Because a scramble score is a team score, there is no individual side action, and Captain’s Choice rounds are not posted to anyone’s Turnt Index.

Common questions

Is Captain’s Choice the same as a scramble?

Yes. The names are used interchangeably.

Do all players have to hit every shot?

In a standard scramble, yes: everyone plays from the chosen spot each time. House rules vary.

Why not just add up everyone’s handicaps?

A scramble team gets to choose its best shot every time, so it plays much better than any single player. The allowance percentages account for that.
